Roof Square Footage Calculator helps you estimate the actual sloped roof area from roof dimensions and pitch. Enter the measurements you know, choose the roof pitch, and get the roof area and roofing squares for a simple roof section or multiple roof sections.
How to use the roof square footage calculator
Choose the calculation mode that matches your roof. For a simple rectangular roof, enter the building length, building width, overhang and roof pitch. You can also calculate a roof section directly from its length and width, or add multiple roof sections and total them together.
- Choose Simple Roof, Roof Area from Roof Length × Roof Width, or Multiple Roof Sections.
- Select Imperial or Metric units.
- Enter the roof dimensions and select the roof pitch.
- Use Custom pitch when your roof is not one of the preset pitches.
- Click Calculate Roof Area to see the estimated sloped area and roofing squares.
For a roof project where the pitch is not known, you can first use our Roof Pitch Calculator to determine the pitch from rise and run.
What is roof square footage?
Roof square footage is the surface area of the roof measured along the slope, rather than just the flat footprint of the building. Because a pitched roof is sloped, its actual surface area is greater than the horizontal base area.
The difference depends on the roof pitch. A steeper roof has a larger pitch multiplier, so the same building footprint produces more roof surface area.
How to calculate roof square footage
For a simple rectangular roof, first calculate the horizontal base area:
Base Roof Area = Length × Width
Then adjust the base area for the roof pitch:
Roof Area = Base Roof Area × Pitch Multiplier
If the roof has an overhang, include the overhang in the roof dimensions before calculating the base area. For example, a 40 ft by 30 ft building with a 1 ft overhang on each side has an effective footprint of 42 ft by 32 ft.
Roof square footage formula
The pitch multiplier is based on the roof rise and horizontal run:
Pitch Multiplier = √(1 + (Rise ÷ Run)²)
For a 6:12 roof, the multiplier is about 1.118. A 1,200 sq ft horizontal base area therefore produces about 1,341.64 sq ft of sloped roof area.
The calculator performs these calculations automatically so you do not have to work out the multiplier yourself.
What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is a common roofing measurement equal to 100 square feet of roof area. To convert roof area to roofing squares, divide the roof area by 100.
For example, 1,500 sq ft of roof area is 15 roofing squares. Roofing contractors and material estimates often use roofing squares when discussing quantities.
How overhang affects roof area
An overhang extends the roof beyond the building footprint. When you enter an overhang for the Simple Roof mode, the calculator adds the overhang to both sides of the relevant dimensions before calculating the base area.
For example, with a 40 ft by 30 ft building and a 1 ft overhang on each side, the effective dimensions become 42 ft by 32 ft. The larger base area is then adjusted for the selected roof pitch.
How to calculate multiple roof sections
Many roofs are made from more than one rectangular section. The Multiple Roof Sections mode lets you enter each section separately and then adds the calculated areas together.
Measure each section as accurately as possible and use the pitch that applies to that section. If different sections have different pitches, you can enter the appropriate pitch for each section before calculating the total.
Roof square footage example
Suppose a simple rectangular roof has a 40 ft by 30 ft base and a 6:12 pitch.
- Base area: 40 × 30 = 1,200 sq ft
- 6:12 pitch multiplier: about 1.118
- Sloped roof area: about 1,341.64 sq ft
- Roofing squares: about 13.42
This is a planning estimate. Actual material requirements can be higher because of waste, cuts, overlaps, roof details and product-specific installation requirements.
Roof pitch and roof square footage
Roof pitch changes the amount of roof surface that covers the same horizontal footprint. If you already know the pitch, enter it directly. If you know the rise and run instead, use the Roof Pitch Calculator first.
After estimating the roof area, you can use the Shingle Calculator to estimate roofing materials for a simple roof.
Roof Square Footage Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate the square footage of a roof?
Calculate the horizontal base area from the roof dimensions, then multiply it by the pitch multiplier. For a roof with multiple sections, calculate each section and add the results together.
Does roof pitch increase square footage?
Yes. A pitched roof has more surface area than its horizontal footprint because the roof surface is sloped.
How many roofing squares is 2,000 square feet?
2,000 square feet equals 20 roofing squares, because one roofing square is 100 square feet.
Do I include overhang when calculating roof area?
Yes, if you want the roof surface estimate to include the area extending beyond the building walls. Enter the overhang used by your roof design.
Can I calculate a roof with multiple sections?
Yes. Use Multiple Roof Sections and enter each rectangular section separately. The calculator totals the sections for you.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. The calculator supports metric measurements and reports the calculated roof area in square meters. Roofing squares are also shown using the standard 100-square-foot roofing unit.
Can this calculator measure a complex roof automatically?
No. This version is designed for simple rectangular roof sections. Complex roofs with many intersecting planes, dormers, valleys or unusual geometry should be measured section by section or verified by a qualified professional.
Does roof square footage include waste?
No. The calculator estimates roof surface area. Roofing material estimates may need additional allowance for cuts, overlaps, starter materials, valleys, hips, ridges and product-specific waste.
