Use this asphalt calculator to estimate how much asphalt you may need for a driveway, parking area, path, paving project or other surface. Enter the project dimensions, asphalt thickness and density to estimate volume, weight and tons. You can also add extra material for waste and an optional price per ton for a material-cost estimate.

How much asphalt do I need?

The amount of asphalt you need depends mainly on the surface area, planned thickness and asphalt density. Measure the length and width of the area, choose the thickness you plan to install, and use the calculator above to estimate the required tons.

For example, a 20-foot by 10-foot area has 200 square feet of surface area. At a 3-inch thickness, the calculator converts that volume into an estimated asphalt weight and tonnage. Adding extra material can help account for normal waste and project conditions.

How the asphalt calculator works

The calculator follows the basic quantity calculation used for asphalt material planning:

  • Area: length × width.
  • Volume: area × asphalt thickness.
  • Weight: volume × selected asphalt density.
  • Tons: estimated weight converted to US tons.
  • Extra material: the selected waste percentage is added to the base tonnage.
  • Material cost: tons including extra material × your price per ton.

These results are planning estimates. Your asphalt supplier’s mix density, compaction requirements and site conditions should be used when they are available.

Asphalt tonnage calculation

An asphalt tonnage calculator converts the volume of asphalt required into weight and US tons. This is useful when ordering material because asphalt is commonly purchased and delivered by the ton.

The calculator supports both feet/inches and meters/centimeters. You can use the average density option for a general estimate or enter a custom density supplied by your asphalt provider.

Asphalt material cost

If you know the price of asphalt per ton, enter it in the optional price field. The calculator will estimate the material cost using the required tons after the selected extra-material percentage.

This is a material cost estimate, not a complete paving quote. Labor, delivery, grading, excavation, base preparation, equipment, taxes and other project costs may be separate.

Asphalt density and thickness

Thickness has a direct effect on the amount of asphalt required. A thicker pavement section needs more material for the same surface area. Asphalt density also affects the weight and tonnage calculation.

For the most accurate estimate, use the density or mix information provided by your supplier. If you do not have supplier data, the calculator’s average-density option provides a starting estimate.

Asphalt Calculator FAQ

What information do I need to use the asphalt calculator?

You need the length, width and planned asphalt thickness. You can also choose an asphalt density, add extra material and enter an optional price per ton.

How many tons of asphalt do I need?

Enter your surface dimensions and thickness in the calculator above. It converts the resulting volume into estimated weight and US tons, then can add your selected extra-material percentage.

Can I use the calculator for an asphalt driveway?

Yes. Measure the driveway area and enter the planned asphalt thickness. For irregular driveways, you can divide the area into simple sections and calculate them separately, then add the quantities together.

Does the calculator include asphalt waste?

Yes. You can select an extra-material percentage. The calculator shows both the base asphalt requirement and the amount including the selected extra material.

Can I use a custom asphalt density?

Yes. If your supplier provides a density, select Custom density and enter the value. This can make the estimate more closely match the specific asphalt mix you are using.

Does this calculate the full cost of an asphalt project?

No. The optional cost result estimates asphalt material cost from the price per ton you enter. A complete project quote may also include labor, delivery, preparation, base work, equipment and other charges.

Is the asphalt estimate exact?

No. It is a planning estimate. Actual asphalt requirements can vary because of mix density, compaction, thickness tolerances, site conditions, waste and supplier specifications.
