Tile Calculator
Estimate how many tiles you need for floors, walls, showers and backsplashes. Calculate tile quantity, waste, boxes and optional material cost.
Area Measurements
Add up to 4 rectangular areas. For one room, use Area 1 only.

Use this tile calculator to estimate how many tiles you need for floors, walls, showers and backsplashes. Enter your area measurements, tile size and extra material percentage to calculate tile quantity, boxes and optional material cost.
How many tiles do I need?
To estimate the number of tiles you need, first calculate the area of the surface you want to cover. Then divide the surface area by the area covered by one tile. Adding extra material helps allow for cuts, breakage and normal installation waste.
For example, a 10-foot by 10-foot area is 100 square feet. With 12-inch by 12-inch tiles, each tile covers 1 square foot, so the base estimate is 100 tiles before extra material is added.
How the tile calculator works
The calculator uses your project dimensions and tile dimensions to estimate the quantity required:
- Total area: length × width for each area you enter, added together.
- Tile area: tile length × tile width, converted to the same area unit.
- Tiles required: total project area ÷ tile area.
- Extra material: your selected waste percentage is added to the tile quantity and covered area.
- Boxes: when you enter tiles per box, the calculator rounds up to the next complete box.
- Tile cost: the covered area including extra material × your price per square foot.
Floor tile calculator
For a floor, measure the length and width of each rectangular section you want to tile. You can enter up to four areas in the calculator, which is useful when a room or project has more than one section.
Wall tile calculator
For a wall, use the wall length and height as the two dimensions. For multiple walls, enter each rectangular wall area separately and the calculator will combine the areas.
Shower tile calculator
For shower walls, measure each wall section and enter the dimensions separately when needed. Doorways, windows and other openings should be accounted for when you determine the area to be tiled.
Backsplash calculator
A backsplash can be estimated by measuring its length and height. If the backsplash has multiple sections, use additional area rows. For outlets, cabinets and other interruptions, consider the actual layout and allow enough extra material for cuts.
How much extra tile should I buy?
The right amount of extra tile depends on the project layout, tile size, number of cuts, pattern and installation conditions. The calculator lets you choose from 0% to 30% extra material so you can adjust the estimate to your project.
A simple layout may require less extra material than a project with many corners, diagonal cuts, small areas or a more complicated pattern. Your installer or tile supplier can also provide guidance for a specific project.
How to calculate tile cost
If you know the tile price per square foot, enter it in the optional price field. The calculator multiplies the area including your selected extra material by the price per square foot to provide an estimated tile material cost.
This is a material estimate only. Installation labor, adhesive, grout, trim, delivery, demolition, taxes and other project expenses may be separate.
Tile Calculator FAQ
How does a tile calculator work?
A tile calculator compares the area you need to cover with the area covered by one tile, then adds the extra material percentage you select.
How many tiles do I need for 100 square feet?
The answer depends on tile size. For example, 12-inch by 12-inch tiles cover 1 square foot each, so 100 square feet requires 100 tiles before extra material. Smaller tiles require more individual tiles to cover the same area.
How much extra tile should I buy?
There is no single percentage for every project. Use the calculator’s waste setting to compare different allowances and consider the tile pattern, number of cuts, room shape and installation conditions.
Can I calculate tile for a shower?
Yes. Select Shower Tile and enter the dimensions of the shower area. For several walls, use additional area rows.
Can I calculate backsplash tile?
Yes. Select Backsplash and enter the backsplash length and height. Add separate areas when the backsplash has multiple sections.
Can I calculate tile cost?
Yes. Enter your tile price per square foot. The calculator estimates material cost using the covered area after the selected extra material percentage.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. The calculator supports meters and centimeters as well as feet and inches.
Are the tile results exact?
No. The results are planning estimates. Actual tile requirements can change because of cuts, layout, breakage, grout joints, product packaging and installation conditions.
