How to use the Crushed Stone Calculator

Use this crushed stone calculator to estimate the amount of crushed stone needed for driveways, paths, patios, bases and other material projects. Enter your measurements and choose the mode that matches your project to calculate volume, weight, cost, 3/4 inch stone, coverage or multiple areas.

  1. Select Imperial for feet and inches or Metric for meters and centimeters.
  2. Enter the length, width and depth of the area.
  3. Choose the result you need: volume, weight, cost, 3/4 inch stone, coverage or multiple areas.
  4. Adjust the waste percentage when your project needs more or less extra material.
  5. Use supplier information for actual stone density, product coverage and pricing whenever it is available.

How much crushed stone do I need?

The amount of crushed stone you need depends on the surface area and the depth of the stone layer. For a rectangular area, multiply length by width by depth after converting the measurements to compatible units.

For example, a 20 ft × 12 ft area with a 4-inch depth contains 80 cubic feet, or about 2.96 cubic yards, before waste. With 10% extra material, the estimate is about 3.26 cubic yards.

Crushed Stone Calculator Formula

The basic volume formula is:

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

For Imperial measurements, convert inches to feet before calculating cubic feet.

How to calculate crushed stone in cubic yards

First calculate cubic feet, then divide by 27:

Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.

How to calculate crushed stone in cubic meters

For Metric measurements, convert centimeters to meters and multiply length × width × depth to get cubic meters.

Adding waste to crushed stone

A waste allowance helps account for uneven ground, small measurement differences, handling and normal material loss. The calculator uses 10% as the default, but you can change it for your project.

For example, 2.96 cubic yards with 10% waste becomes approximately 3.26 cubic yards.

Crushed Stone Weight and Density

Crushed stone does not have one universal weight per cubic foot. Density varies with rock type, particle size, moisture and compaction. The calculator therefore lets you choose a practical density or enter a custom supplier value.

The basic relationship is:

Weight = Volume × Density

For example, 80 cubic feet at 105 lb/ft³ weighs about 8,400 lb before any conversion or rounding.

For a real material order, use the density supplied by your quarry or stone supplier when available.

Crushed Stone Cost Calculator

To estimate material cost, enter the price per cubic yard and the calculator applies your waste allowance to the required volume.

For example, 2.96 cubic yards with 10% waste is about 3.26 cubic yards. At $45 per cubic yard, the estimated material cost is about $146.67.

Actual prices vary by stone type, supplier, location, order size, delivery distance and local market conditions. Delivery charges are not included unless you account for them separately.

3/4 Inch Crushed Stone Calculator

The 3/4 inch crushed stone calculator is designed for projects using commonly specified 3/4-inch crushed stone. Enter the project dimensions, waste percentage and density to estimate cubic yards and weight.

Because the weight of 3/4 inch stone can vary between products and moisture conditions, the density is adjustable rather than being treated as an exact universal value.

The calculator can therefore target searches such as 3/4 crushed stone calculator, 3/4 inch crushed stone calculator tons and related yard or quantity calculations while keeping the result tied to the actual project measurements.

Crushed Stone Coverage Calculator

The Coverage mode lets you enter a surface area and depth and estimates the required crushed stone volume after waste. It also provides an estimated weight using the selected density.

This can be useful for driveways, walkways, patios, landscape areas and other projects where you know the surface area and desired stone depth.

Crushed Stone for a Driveway

For a driveway, measure each section separately if the shape or depth changes. Calculate the required volume for each section, then combine the results. Driveway base designs can use different aggregate sizes and layer depths, so follow the project specification or supplier guidance for the appropriate material.

Multiple Areas

Use Multiple Areas when your project contains several sections. Add each area’s length, width and depth, then calculate the combined volume.

This is useful for projects such as a driveway plus a walkway, several patio sections, or multiple areas with the same crushed stone product.

Crushed Stone Sizes and Types

Crushed stone is sold in different sizes and gradations for different applications. A 3/4-inch product is not automatically interchangeable with every other aggregate size. Product names and specifications can also vary by supplier and region.

Use the exact product specification, density and coverage information supplied by the seller when placing an order.

Crushed Stone Calculator Examples

Example 1: 20 × 12 ft area with 4-inch depth

Area = 240 ft². At 4 inches deep, the volume is 80 ft³, or about 2.96 yd³. With 10% waste, plan for about 3.26 yd³.

Example 2: Weight estimate

If the volume is 80 ft³ and the selected density is 105 lb/ft³, the estimated weight is 8,400 lb. The actual delivered weight can differ because density varies by material and moisture.

Example 3: Multiple areas

If two project areas each contain 80 ft³, the combined volume is 160 ft³, or about 5.93 yd³.

Important Notes

  • Crushed stone density varies by material, moisture and compaction.
  • Use supplier-provided density and product specifications when available.
  • Waste is an estimate and should be adjusted for the shape and condition of your project.
  • Stone cost estimates do not automatically include delivery, taxes or local fees.
  • For engineered bases, drainage systems or other technically specified work, follow the project plans or professional guidance.
  • Calculator results are estimates and should be verified before placing a large material order.

Crushed Stone Calculator FAQ

How much crushed stone do I need?

Measure the length, width and required depth of the area, calculate the volume, and add an appropriate waste allowance. The calculator converts the result to cubic feet, cubic yards and cubic meters.

How many cubic yards of crushed stone do I need?

Calculate the volume in cubic feet and divide by 27. Add your waste allowance before ordering.

How do I calculate crushed stone in tons?

Calculate the volume and multiply it by the appropriate stone density. Divide the resulting pounds by 2,000 to estimate US tons.

What is the density of crushed stone?

There is no single value for every crushed stone product. Density depends on the rock, size, moisture and compaction. Use your supplier’s specification when possible.

How much does 3/4 inch crushed stone weigh?

The weight depends on the specific product and its density. Use the 3/4 Inch Stone mode and enter the density supplied by your seller for a more useful estimate.

How much crushed stone do I need for a driveway?

It depends on the driveway area and required depth, as well as the specified base and aggregate layers. Calculate each layer separately when the project calls for different materials or depths.

How much crushed stone covers a square foot?

Coverage depends on the depth. A deeper layer requires more material per square foot. Enter the total area and depth in the Coverage mode to estimate the required quantity.

Can I calculate crushed stone for multiple areas?

Yes. Use Multiple Areas to enter each section and calculate the combined volume.

Does the calculator work in metric units?

Yes. Select Metric and enter the measurements in the units shown by the calculator.

Should I use 10% waste?

Ten percent is the default starting allowance in this calculator, but the appropriate amount depends on the project. Adjust it when your site conditions or supplier recommendations call for a different allowance.

For other material estimates, you can also use our Gravel Calculator, Concrete Calculator, Asphalt Calculator and Sand Calculator.
