Use this flooring calculator to estimate how much flooring you need for a room or several rooms. Enter your measurements to calculate floor area, add a waste allowance, estimate the number of boxes, and work out material and installation costs.

How to use the flooring calculator

  1. Select Imperial (ft) for feet or Metric (m) for meters.
  2. Enter the length and width of the floor area.
  3. Choose a waste percentage. A 10% starting allowance is commonly useful for straightforward layouts, but your actual requirement can vary.
  4. For Flooring Required, enter the coverage of one box or package from the product label.
  5. For cost estimates, enter the flooring price per square foot or square meter and, where applicable, the installation and preparation costs.
  6. For more than one room, use Multiple Rooms and add each area separately.

How much flooring do I need?

Start by calculating the floor area. For a rectangular room, multiply the length by the width. Then add your waste allowance so the estimate includes material for cuts, fitting and normal installation waste.

For example, a 20 ft × 12 ft room has a base area of 240 sq ft. With 10% waste, the flooring quantity used for the estimate is 264 sq ft.

Flooring calculator formula

For a rectangular room:

Floor area = Length × Width

After adding waste:

Flooring area to purchase = Floor area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)

For boxes or packages:

Boxes required = Ceiling(Flooring area to purchase ÷ Coverage per box)

The calculator rounds the number of boxes up because you normally need whole packages.

How much waste should I add?

The right waste allowance depends on the flooring product, room shape, installation pattern, number of cuts and installer experience. A simple rectangular room with a straightforward layout may need less extra material than a room with many corners, angles or a diagonal pattern.

Our calculator starts with 10% waste as a practical default, but you can change the percentage to match your project and the manufacturer’s or installer’s guidance.

Flooring boxes calculator

If your flooring is sold by the box, enter the coverage printed on the product packaging. The calculator divides the required flooring area by the coverage per box and rounds up to the next whole box.

For example, if your adjusted requirement is 264 sq ft and each box covers 20 sq ft, you need 14 boxes. Fourteen boxes provide 280 sq ft of stated coverage.

Always check the product label because box coverage varies by product, plank or tile size, and manufacturer.

Flooring cost calculator

To estimate material cost, multiply the flooring quantity by the price per square foot or square meter:

Material cost = Flooring area to purchase × Price per unit area

For example, 264 sq ft at $3.50 per sq ft gives an estimated material cost of $924.

Actual purchase prices can vary by product, retailer, brand, promotions, delivery, taxes and local market conditions.

Flooring installation cost

The Complete Estimate mode lets you enter an installation or labor price and an optional preparation or removal amount. This can help you build a simple project estimate before requesting a professional quote.

Important: the calculator applies the waste-adjusted flooring area to the material and installation inputs in the Complete Estimate mode. If your contractor prices labor using a different basis, replace the labor input with the rate and method from the contractor’s quote.

Calculate flooring for multiple rooms

Use Multiple Rooms when your project contains several spaces. Add each room’s length and width, and the calculator combines their areas before applying the waste allowance.

This is useful for bedrooms, hallways, living rooms and other areas that will use the same flooring product. If different rooms use different products or installation patterns, calculate them separately.

Laminate, vinyl, hardwood and other flooring

The calculator is designed to estimate floor area and quantities for many flooring projects, including laminate, vinyl, luxury vinyl plank, hardwood and other products sold by area or package coverage.

The calculation does not assume that every flooring product has the same box size or coverage. Enter the actual coverage shown on your product packaging for a more useful box estimate.

Flooring calculator in square feet and meters

Use Imperial (ft) when your measurements are in feet and Metric (m) when your measurements are in meters. The calculator keeps the calculation in the selected unit system so your result matches your measurements.

Flooring Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate how much flooring I need?

Measure the floor length and width, multiply them to get the floor area, then add an appropriate waste allowance. If flooring is sold in boxes, divide the adjusted area by the coverage per box and round up.

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Divide the flooring area including waste by the coverage of one box and round up to a whole box. Use the coverage printed on your actual flooring product.

What is a good waste percentage for flooring?

A 10% starting allowance can work for a simple layout, but the appropriate amount depends on the room shape, installation pattern, cuts and product. Follow the manufacturer’s or installer’s recommendation when available.

Does this flooring calculator work for laminate flooring?

Yes. Enter the room dimensions, waste allowance and the coverage per laminate flooring box to estimate the required quantity. Use the product label for actual box coverage.

Can I use it for vinyl or LVP flooring?

Yes. The same area calculation can be used for vinyl and luxury vinyl plank projects. Enter the coverage and pricing information for your specific product.

Can I calculate flooring for several rooms?

Yes. Use Multiple Rooms to enter each room separately. The calculator adds the areas and applies the waste allowance to the combined requirement.

Does the calculator include installation cost?

Yes. Complete Estimate includes an installation or labor input and an optional preparation or removal cost. Use the rates from your local contractor or quote for a more realistic project estimate.

Are flooring calculator results exact?

No. The results are estimates based on the measurements and assumptions you enter. Product coverage, cuts, waste, room shape, installation method and local prices can change the final requirement and cost.
